Jill and Andrea will be hosting our month of Community Classes in June and will be focusing on the foundations of Iyengar Yoga throughout the month

De-mystifying Iyengar Yoga I - Why we use props with Andrea Haywood
Thursday 8th June |  6:30 - 7:30pm

As explained in our History of Yoga blog, Iyengar Yoga developed in a different way to the other types of Yoga and one of the differentiating features is our use of props. In this class, we will take a look at blocks, bricks and belts and see how incorporating their use into our practice helps to enhance it and protect our bodies against injury, by promoting precision and alignment.

We will be show-casing countryflyers brilliant equipment but if you don’t have any, please have a couple of heavy books, ideally of equal or similar size and a dressing gown cord or similar to use as a belt.

De-mystifying Iyengar Yoga II - Why we are more tortoise than hare with Jill Johnson
Thursday 15th June |  6:30 - 7:30pm

In Iyengar Yoga we are known to be slow and steady with our poses. But that doesn’t stop us reaching the more challenging asanas. So in this class we will look at how to approach and work towards padmasana (lotus pose) safely, whether seated or inverted. What we need to do to prepare the body and focusing on the sequencing for which Iyengar Yoga is famous, to allow everyone to achieve the benefits of the pose. De-mystifying a complex pose and showing how it is accessible for all.

De-mystifying Iyengar Yoga III - We flow too with Alice Cutteridge
Thursday 22nd June |  6:30 - 7:30pm

As we looked at in the previous two classes, the use of props and attention to alignment in the poses, means that in Iyengar Yoga we can also then develop more strength and stamina by flowing the poses together. Always under the guidance of an Iyengar trained teacher, (did you know it takes at least 3 years to train as an Iyengar Teacher ?) we sequence the poses and the breath into a flow class.

We will break down the sequences and explore how to work safely as Alice takes us through a powerful and dynamic class.

De-mystifying Iyengar Yoga IV - aligning the body, mind, breath and soul with Jill Johnson and Andrea Haywood
Thursday 29th June |  6:30 - 7:30pm

This is our ultimate goal in practising yoga. Initially we all tend, in the West, to come to yoga for the physical benefits. But as our practice continues, the alignments of the body, mind, breath and soul can be considered - samadhi - the eighth limb of Yoga.

In this class, we look at how all the physical work which we do in our asana class, facilitates a focus on our breath and all the myriad benefits which we can then experience from slowing things down.
